Jakarta, qclubinternational.com – Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Sugiono and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan co-chaired the 17th Meeting of the Indonesia-Malaysia Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This meeting reaffirmed the close ties between Indonesia and Malaysia, as neighboring nations, countries sharing common cultural roots, co-founders of ASEAN, and strategic partners. Amid growing global dynamics and uncertainty, both countries agreed to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, as well as uphold ASEAN unity and centrality.
“The relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia runs far deeper than a mere bilateral partnership between two nations, as we share common heritage, culture, language, borders, and many other similarities,” Minister Sugiono emphasized.
As a follow-up to the 13th Annual Consultation between President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held last year, the two Foreign Ministers reviewed progress in bilateral relations and discussed a range of priority agendas. Discussions covered the resolution of land and maritime boundary issues, protection of Indonesian citizens and Indonesian migrant workers — including access to education for their children — as well as enhanced cooperation in economic development and investment, energy, connectivity, the halal industry, health, education, science and technology, and tourism.
The meeting also noted progress in several areas of strategic cooperation, including management of land and maritime borders, improved connectivity through the Dumai–Melaka and Johor–Batam Roll-on/Roll-off initiatives, and strengthened defense and security cooperation, particularly in the maritime domain.
Beyond bilateral matters, the two Ministers exchanged views on various regional and global developments. Indonesia and Malaysia reaffirmed the importance of ASEAN centrality in maintaining regional stability, supported peacebuilding efforts in Myanmar, backed de-escalation of conflicts in the Middle East, and reiterated their support for the struggle of the Palestinian people.
Both nations also agreed to continue enhancing coordination across international forums to advance the shared interests of Global South countries. In closing the meeting, the two Foreign Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen the Indonesia–Malaysia partnership, one that delivers tangible benefits to the people of both nations and contributes to regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
